Edible Landscape

Our Edible Landscape was created in the spring and early summer of 2008. Prior to that, this was a typical office building landscape consisting of a few overgrown burning bushes and spireas. The sod and shrubs were dug out and the poor, gravelly soil was ammended with composted horse manure. Paths were created to allow access to the plants without compacting the soil around them.

lettuceEdible Landscaping is one of the hottest gardening trends. The purpose of our demonstration garden is to encourage gardeners to mix fruits, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers into their landscapes. Gardeners can create a landscape of entirely edible plants or choose to mix a few of these plants into existing gardens.

Our garden is surrounded by a low cost deer fence. Cloth strips sprayed with deer repellent discourage deer from browsing in our garden. Clips have been added to the twine to allow staff and volunteers easy access to the garden for maintenance and harvesting purposes.

Most of the vegetables in this garden are harvested by our Nutrition Information Program staff, to be distributed to local food pantries.
